What is Colloquial North?

Colloquial North refers to the social convention of using the street grid as the basis for cardinal directions in urban environments, even when the grid does not perfectly align with true north as it is on a compass.

Manhattan's grid might be the most famous example of a colloquial north, but the phenomenon is particularly acute in my hometown of Montreal, where the river is assumed to flow west to east, even though it's going northwest, the sun sets in the north, and it's possible to go northbound on a bridge towards the South Shore.
